EVENTS: “Circular Economy for the Composites Industry” seminar to be held in July

A one-day series of presentations held under the title of “A Circular Economy for the Composites Industry” will be held in Coseley, West Midlands / UK on 7 July this year. Organised by Composites UK (Hemel Hempstead, Herts / UK; www.compositesuk.co.uk) and located in the offices of ELG Carbon Fibre (Coseley, West Midlands / UK; www.elgcf.com), the event will address developments in end-of-life solutions for carbon and glass fibre composites as well as other types of waste generated during the composites manufacturing supply chain.

Speakers will come from both industry and academia, and address topics such as applications for recycled carbon fibre in the aerospace industry, designing composites for the circular economy, as well as solutions for raw wet and dry glass fibre waste streams, among others. On the whole, the presentations will stress the need for industry to play a part in design for end of life, while at the same time optimising waste management practices and using recycled material in high-value products.

Projects

What projects are Composites UK involved with?

Composites UK is involved in a number of ongoing projects.

Composites Innovation Cluster

The Composites Innovation Cluster (CiC), funded by the Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI), will deliver 15 integrated capability projects over a three year period across 28 partners. The CiC is led by Cytec Industrial Materials, partnered by Axillium Research and Composites UK, with support from strategic partner The National Composites Centre in response to the demand signals of all UK industry sectors. The aim of the CiC is to deliver a holistic supply-chain model, which will extend throughout the composites community, creating synergies and sustain collaborative relationships throughout the supply chain.

The CiC will:

  • Create over 200 Jobs and £190m of business growth over 3 years from 2013 to 2016
  • Create a Training Curriculum for the Composites Sector
  • Create wider adoption of Composites in UK markets
  • Build an Intelligent, Sustainable, Competitive and highly networked UK Composites supply base
  • Develop a long term, self-supporting, UK supply chain capability that is successful and sustainable beyond AMSCI funding.
