PARSIPPANY, N.J., USA – September 20, 2018 – During the upcoming Pigment and Color Science Forum and the PNWSCT Northwest Coatings Fest, two Sun Chemical experts will discuss some of the latest trends in pigments.
Jonathan Doll (right image), Ph.D., R&D Leader of Effect Pigments at Sun Chemical, will give a presentation entitled “Soft Focus, Optical Blur, and the Pigments that Cause Them” on Thursday, October 4th at 2 p.m. during the Pigment and Color Science Forum held in Boston, Mass. on October 3-5, 2018.
Doll will talk about how the soft focus effect that has traditionally been achieved in photography has been identified as a desirable effect in cosmetic and personal care applications to obscure blemishes and wrinkles while maintaining a natural look. During his presentation, Doll will discuss methods to measure soft focus and will introduce a new soft-focus pigment system for use in applications, ranging from cosmetics to coatings and plastics.
Sun Chemical’s Dr. Nilanjan Chakrabarti (left image), Technical Manager, Coatings Applications at Sun Chemical, will give a presentation entitled “Future of Paints: Innovations in High Performance Pigments and Manufacturing” on October 11 at 8:50 a.m. at the PNWSCT 2018 Northwest Coatings Fest in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada from October 10-12, 2018.
In his presentation, Chakrabarti will focus on some of Sun Chemical’s newest high performance pigments, including:
- Sunbrite Yellow 74, Sun Chemical’s newest Azo yellow for architectural coatings developed specifically for decorative coatings producers and the needs of machine colorants;
- Palomar Blue 15, specifically developed for the automotive coatings market and designed to have a highly desirable neutral flop color in metallic coatings; and
- Quindo® Red 122, a pigment that is suitable for water and solventborne systems and has excellent styling for opacity and durability for deco coatings.
Doll received a Ph.D. in polymer science from the University of Connecticut in 2011 and joined Sun Chemical’s Pigments team in 2012. His research at Sun Chemical has focused on the synthesis and design of new metallic and pearlescent effect pigments and preparations, as well as on improving the properties of existing effects pigments. In his six years at Sun Chemical, Doll has filed over 15 provisional patents and published six papers.
Chakrabarti is a Ph.D. chemist by training from Tulane University and has over 25 years of experience in pigments and coatings innovation with commercialization for architectural, automotive and industrial coatings including powder. Chakrabarti has several papers, patents and conference presentations in the pigments and colorants area for coatings, meeting current and future customer expectations with innovation.
