The Abadan Petrochemical Complex stopped its activity due to high salinity in Abadan water distribution systems and vicinty waters. According to officials:
Abadan Petrochemical Complex announced that due to excessive water salt saturation in Abadan, all plaster pipes in the complex were in trouble. Despite the fact that the situation continued for several days, the responsible officials finally decided to shut off all the units. And so the complex was shut down till not known period!
? Holiday process continues to improve the situation.
In the past month, due to the decrease of the Karun River’s Debby the salinity stream water overcame the freshwater, which has led to the advent of salt water to the cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr.
This has even led to a decrease in water consumption in the people of Abadan and Khorramshahr, so that the water consumption price of the people in the last two months announced as free of charge.
This may further increase the price of PVC in the free market which is already under the threat of high FOREX.
Abadan City and and Abadan Petrochenical Histories:
ABADAN city is located in the southern west of Iran and close to Iran-Iraq border. The city was originally a small town However since the establishment of ABADAN Refinery in 1911 it became an important industrial city in Iran.
Iran.ABADAN city was surrounded by Iraqi forces during the first year of Iran-Iraq war in 1980 and was mainly destroyed by Iraqi fire. However it was reconstructed after the war and still has an important rule in Iranian oil industry.
Abadan Petchem History:
In 1963 the French institute of oil was commissioned by the government to study about establishing petrochemical industry in Iran. The studies were afterwards followed by National Iranian Oil Company and finally it was decided to establish a petrochemical complex near ABADAN Refinery.
B.F.GOODRICH Company and the construction contract was left to the LUMMUS Company in 1966. The petrochemical complex was constructed during 1966-1968 and started operation in 1969 to produce 20000 MTPY P.V.C. and 10000 MTPY D.D.B. In 1975 the P.V.C.
production capacity was expanded to 60000 MTPY. However the max. annual production did not exceed 30000 tons until 1980. In sep. 1980 the complex was shut down due to starting Iran-Iraq war and all the production facilities were mainly destroyed during the 8-years war. After stopping the war in 1988 reconstruction operation was executed in 4 separate phases and completed in 1993.
The only plant completely renewed was chlorine plant which was highly destroyed and corroded during the war. In 1996 the company was left to private section by the government. The complex production rate has increased considerably in the recent years. The maximum achieved annual production of P.V.C. was 59800 tons in 2005.
