US compounder and distributor PolyOne (Cleveland, Ohio; www.polyone.com) has acquired two speciality businesses from Gordon Holdings (Englewood, Colorado / USA) for USD 85m, including intellectual property, trademarks and production assets. The Ohio group said the new additions, Gordon Composites (Montrose, Colorado / USA; www.gordoncomposites.com) and Polystrand (Englewood, Colorado; www.polystrand.com), will add USD 40m to its sales revenue and will be accretive to earnings in 2017.

The businesses, said to both complement and strengthen PolyOne’s existing portfolio, will form part of a new platform called PolyOne Advanced Composites focusing on production of continuous fibre-reinforced thermoset products. Gordon Composites develops high-strength profiles and laminates for use in vertical and crossbow archery, sports and recreation equipment, prosthetics and office furniture systems, while Polystrand focuses on composites technology, combining the strength and weight characteristics of the materials with design flexibility for applications in the aerospace, transportation, outdoor as well as security and protection markets.

Craig Nikrant, president Specialty Engineered Materials, said PolyOne has now established itself as a leading innovator and producer of continuous reinforced thermoplastic composite technology. “We expect this technology to become a platform of the future for companies whose products demand strength and design flexibility,” he added.
