Iranian Vice President for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy (ODISTC)has announced the launch of Iran’s national open-source artificial intelligence (AI) platform and the creation of a smart pathway in the Abbasabad technological zone, in Tehran

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the AI platform, Hossein Afshin said the initiatives aim to integrate AI into everyday life, reduce reliance on foreign technologies, and position Iran as a regional leader in AI innovation.

Emphasizing its significance in achieving technological independence, Afshin said, “This platform allows us to utilize domestic algorithms without relying on foreign APIs, marking a major milestone for Iran’s AI development.”

The platform, developed by a 100-member team of postdoctoral students, professors, and independent researchers, was completed in just five months, showcasing Iran’s rapid progress in the field.

Afshin noted that the project builds on a decade of accumulated knowledge and will continue to evolve, with the final version set for release in March 2026.

In a groundbreaking move, Afshin revealed that researchers from two foreign countries will collaborate on the platform’s development, fosteringinternational cooperation in AI innovation.

“This partnership will enhance our capabilities and allow us to contribute to global AI advancements,” he added.

Afshin also announced plans to create a smart walking path in Abbasabad, enabling citizens to experience AI firsthand. “This initiative will help people tangibly understand AI and its applications, moving beyond abstract concepts,” he explained.

The smart pathway, set to be operational next year, will serve as a public demonstration of AI’s potential in urban environments.

To support these efforts, Iran has established a Graphics Processing Units (GPU) farm equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Afshin confirmed that the infrastructure is ready and will be operational within days. “We have no concerns about AI infrastructure; the latest global equipment has been procured and installed,” he stated.
