Taipei Plas in Taiwan and Japan’s International Plastics Fair, The two Asian plastics trade shows that were scheduled for this autumn, are being postponed or canceled because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Organizers of the Taipei show, originally slated for Sept. 9-13, announced June 2 that their show would be postponed. They said they would announce new dates as soon as possible.

Taiwan has been largely unscathed by the pandemic, recording 7 deaths among its 23 million people.

But the country’s large plastics machinery sector typically ranks among the top five or six in global exports and both it and the show depend heavily on trade.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council, which organizes Taipei Plas, said it was canceling because of “the circumstances of global business being severely impacted by the COVID-19.”

Japan’s IPF show, as well, said uncertainty around the pandemic was forcing it to make the “very difficult” decision to cancel the fair, originally planned for Oct. 6-10 in the Tokyo metro area.

IPF said it would not reschedule and the next edition would be in fall 2023, keeping with the show’s three-year cycle.

“We, as the organizer of the show, put the highest priority on the health and safety of exhibitors, visitors, and everyone else involved,” IPF said. “Considering the circumstances, we came to the conclusion that even if we held IPF Japan 2020, the result would not match the expectations of either exhibitors or visitors.”

IPF said exhibitors would receive full refunds on their space fees.

The actions by the two shows follows the largest plastics trade fair in Asia, Chinaplas, deciding to cancel this year’s edition and focus instead on its next show, slated for 2021.
