Today we received a sudden and sad news, informing of us about the sudden death of Professor Mehdi Barikani, one of Iran’s most famous professors and researchers of polymer science and technology, at the age of 69 after a short period of illness. The news of the death of this indefatigable researcher was announced by “Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute” in a short form and for unknown reasons, it even refrained from mentioning condolences to his family, friends, lovers, other professors and students.
Based on a 40-year-old policy, the Persian website of “Plastics Industry Magazine” did not sacrifice accuracy for speed and prepared the text that you can read below by researching about him.
The late Professor Mehdi Barikani, who is originally from Barikan, one of the villages of Taleghan (near Tehran), was born in 1954. Since the establishment of the Polymer Research Center (later IPPI) he cooperated with this research Institute and has always been a member of the scientific staff of the Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute of Iran, along with Dr. Hamid Mirzadeh, the founder of this research institute. He cooperated with Dr. Mirzaeh and the so called research institute for a along time. He completed his undergraduate studies at Tehran’s Khawrazmi University in 1976 in the field of chemistry, and his master’s degree in polymers in 1978. He completed his PhD at Loughborough University in England in 1986. Professor Barikani’s PhD thesis was in the field of “Thermally stable polyurethane elastomers: their synthesis and properties” and by presenting it in nearly 250 pages in 1986 to the supervisory team of this university, he succeeded in receiving a doctoral degree in the field of polymer science. . After completing his studies, he returned to Iran immediately to continue his services in Iran.
The late Professor Barikani played an essential role in the development of “University of Sistan and Baluchistan“, which started its work in 1974 with the establishment of road and construction engineering in Zahedan city. After returning from England, Prof. Barikani while teaching and guiding students in Amir Kabir University of Technology played an effective role in cooperation with the Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute of Iran. For many years, he held the position of deputy official and research assistant of this research center, and from 1994 to1999, he was also the head of this research center. During his presidency, Polymer Research Center was upgraded to Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute.
The result of his years of research, teaching, authoring and translation, has been writing of 52 approved articles, first author of 25 books in the fields of safety in laboratories, polyurethane, introduction to dynamics of polymers, rigid polyurethane foams, chemistry of aromatic heterocyclic compounds, polyamides and heat resistant polymers , polyurethane chemistry and technology and investigating the properties and applications of sandwich panels and polyurethane thermal insulation in buildings, as well as training 80 master’s and doctoral students, registering 30 patents and publishing more than 150 scientific and research articles in domestic and international prestigious scientific journals and presenting more than 180 articles in national and international congresses. Professor Barikani was also a member of the editorial board of prestigious polymer magazines and an international reviewer of 20 scientific journals such as:
Iranian journal of chemical engineering, and has collaborated with the following publications:
bi-monthly journal of polymer science and technology, member of the editorial board of the newsletter of the Iranian Polymer Association, editor-in-chief, responsible director of the Iranian journal of chemical engineering, editorial member of the quarterly journal of high-energy materials, editorial member of the bi-monthly journal of Iranian chemical engineering
The late Professor Barikani was also a member of the Scientific Associations of Chemical and Chemical Engineering of Iran, Polymer Engineering of Iran, and Chemical Engineering of Iran.
Professor Barikani was selected twice, in 1997 and 2003, as an exemplary national professor, and in 2011, he won the third place in the international festival of fundamental research in Khwarazmi. He also won the award of the Union of Indian Ocean Countries in the field of science and technology transfer at the same time as he received the award of the International Khawrazmi Festival. Among his other positions, we can mention the title of outstanding national professor, receiving the award of the late Allameh Tabatabai in 2013. The summary of his achievements and honors are as follows:
The management and editorial team of “PIMI and PIMW” would like to express their condolences to the respected family of this outstanding polymer researcher for the occurrence of these types of events in relation to unrepeatable people, and then to the scientific community of the country, the society of polymer scholars, professors and staff of the Polymer Research Institute, professors and the staff of Amirkabir University of Technology’s Polymer Faculty and all its students.
